Toyota Mirai
FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
4.5

2019 Mirai

For commuters who live in a region where the hydrogen fueling infrastructure is already built out, opting for the 2019 Toyota Mirai may make a lot of sense. For starters, it's a genuinely futuristic experience since the Mirai is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell that converts the stuff of stars into electricity and water. This electricity goes to a small battery that drives the motor while the water leaves the tailpipe as vapor.

Advantages of Buying a New or Toyota 86

It's easy to pick on the 2019 Toyota 86 and count the ways it falls just short of excellent. It's small inside. There's limited passenger and cargo space. It's not particularly comfortable, especially for taller drivers, and its technology feels dated and inadequate.

In Australia, KE3x was available as 4 door sedan, 2 door sedan, 2 door panel van (KE36) and 4 door wagon (KE38). All had 3K engines and K40 manual gearbox or 3 speed Auto. Sprinters were not available. Later KE5x models were available as 4 door sedan or 2 door coupe (A true pillar-less design) with 4K engine. The KE55 was 50 kg heavier due to the addition of side impact protection in the doors, but due to a change in the body metal and seam sealing they are prone to rust. Later KE55 also used plastic ended bumper bars as opposed to the all chrome bumpers of the previous models, but included a rear sway bar for the first time.

The twelfth generation Corolla in hatchback body style was unveiled as a pre-production model in March 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show as the Auris.[17] The North American production version of the Corolla Hatchback was unveiled on 28 March 2018 at the New York International Auto Show, with the official details and photos revealed on 22 March 2018. The Corolla Hatchback was launched in Japan on 27 June 2018 as the Corolla Sport. The Corolla Hatchback went on sale in the United States in mid-July 2018, and was later launched in Australia on 7 August 2018. Production of the European market Corolla Hatchback began on 14 January 2019, and sales began in the UK in February 2019 and across Europe in March 2019.[18]

If slow and steady wins the race, the Corolla takes the checkered flag. The only noteworthy aspects of its uninspired engine and transmission options are an available manual transmission and a more powerful LE Eco model. For a more involved driving experience, opt for the stick shift, but don't expect anything transformative. Buyers seeking a semblance of peppiness should look at any other competitor.

At the end of your finance term, your Toyota will “hold it’s value”. In other words when you have paid off your vehicle, you not only own it outright, you also benefit from owning a higher value vehicle because of Toyota’s commitment to building long-lasting quality vehicles. Six Toyota vehicles took home Canadian Black Book Awards, given to vehicles that best hold their value when it’s time for a trade-in.

Every Corolla features a touchscreen infotainment system, but the average response time and the absence of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto hinder the experience. In the XSE we drove, the integrated navigation worked well but the unit's interface was overcrowded with touch functions, and the control to adjust the navigation volume was difficult to access.

This latest 2020 Corolla represents one of the most significant redesigns in its long history. It's now a serious competitor against the Honda Civic and the Mazda 3, whereas previous generations often came across as though Toyota was simply phoning it in or relying on its reputation for reliability. If you've been turned off by the last round of Corollas, it may be time for you to come back.

The four primary trims are the SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Limited. Upgrades largely consist of creature comforts, such as seat heating or navigation, and features that improve the vehicle's off-road capabilities. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the SR5 and the Limited, while four-wheel drive is optional for these trims and standard everywhere else. All versions come with a 4.0-liter V6 engine, five-speed automatic transmission and 5,000-pound tow rating.
Though the Corolla has a laundry list of changes and improvements, some of the basics stay the same. Most trims come with the 1.8-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) combo found in the majority of last year's Corollas. At 139 horsepower, it's slightly more powerful than last year, but Toyota says it's also more fuel-efficient. The 2.0-liter engine that's standard in the hatchback is available in the sedan as well, on the sporty SE and XSE variants. It increases output to 169 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque, making the Corolla feel more fleet-footed than its last outing. Buyers looking for a more engaging driving experience will be happy to learn that the six-speed manual transmission option returns for the SE model. All other trim levels rely on a CVT automatic, with 10 simulated gears in manual mode.

So far, so good! Own for less than a week now. Bought for my daughter. I'm 6'2", 245ish and I have plenty of leg and head room. Positives: very stylish, inexpensive, great gas mileage, great visibility and lots of safety features. Negatives: road noise, touch screen is not driver-oriented--should be angled more to the driver; radio interference when adjusting power mirrors.

† Cash incentives valid on retail delivery of select new unregistered vehicles when purchased and registered between May 1, 2019 and May 31, 2019. Cash incentives are comprised of a customer incentive and/or an incentive for cash customer. Incentives for cash customers are available for all Toyota retail customers except customers who lease or purchase finance through Toyota Financial Services at a special rate of interest offered by Toyota as part of a low rate interest program. All advertised lease and finance rates are special rates. Cash incentives (including incentives for cash customers, customer incentives, lease assist, finance assist and various other cash incentives that can arise from time to time) include an amount on account of sales tax and are applied after sales taxes have been charged on the full amount of the negotiated price. Offers are subject to change without notice. Quantities of certain vehicles are limited and dealer trade may be required. Dealer trade availability may also be limited and will vary by model.

The new Corolla Axio is available with either a 1.3-liter 1NR-FE or 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE four-cylinder engines; front- or all-wheel drive. Both 5-speed manual and CVT transmissions are offered. The 1.3-liter engine and all-wheel-drive variants are available only with the CVT transmission.[14] The Corolla Fielder is available with 1.5-liter 1NZ-FE or 1.8-liter 2ZR-FAE four cylinder engines mated with a CVT transmission. The 1.5-liter is available with front- and all-wheel drive, the 1.8-liter is offered only in front-wheel drive.[15] Since 2015 there's a new engine 2NR-FKE, with its VVT-ie technology.

The SR5 is the base model, but it's not bare-bones. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, skid plates, foglights, a rearview camera, heated mirrors, roof rails, a windshield wiper de-icer, a power rear window, power front seats (eight-way driver, four-way passenger), 40/20/40-split reclining and folding second-row seats, cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 120-volt power outlet in the rear cargo area. The standard infotainment system boasts a 6.1-inch touchscreen, one USB port, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, a media player interface, and HD and satellite radio.
The Limited model is more luxury-oriented and sacrifices off-road capability in the process. It gets a Torsen locking center differential (4WD models only), a full-time 4WD system, and a separate suspension system Toyota calls X-REAS that's designed to reduce body roll without hurting ride quality. The Limited also gains the TRD Pro's extra creature comfort features plus 20-inch wheels, special styling, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, keyless ignition and entry, heated and ventilated front seats, and leather seat upholstery. Power-deploying running boards are optional.

The SR5 is equipped much as you would expect for an entry-level model, but it still comes with a touchscreen, power-adjustable seats and five 12-volt power outlets. It's also available with a third row that increases seat capacity to seven. The TRD Off-Road is worth the small increase in the asking price for its locking differential and access it provides to off-road-specific features, including Toyota's trick Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). It also uses wider wheels and gains a crawl control function for slippery surfaces. Both the SR5 and the TRD Off-Road are available in Premium subtrims that add comfort features such as heated front seats, upgraded upholstery, power outside mirrors with heating, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Toyota is a leader in setting new environmental standards as well, being the first to mass produce hybrid vehicles. Toyota released the first all-electric SUV vehicle in 1997 named the RAV4 EV, based on the popular RAV4 model line. The Toyota Prius is another popular hybrid vehicle and is currently the best-selling hybrid vehicle in North America. Other hybrids found in the Toyota line up include the Highlander and Camry. Hybrids are also found in the Lexus line up, including the CT200h, RX 450h, GS450h, and the LS 600h L.
As with the new Corolla hatchback, what's most commendable about the Corolla sedan is the vast, across-the-board improvement over its predecessor. It looks better, drives better, and feels better inside—not that there was really anywhere to go but up from the outgoing Corolla sedan's lackluster driving dynamics, cheap interior, and wonky exterior design.

Although final pricing has not been released yet, we know the sedan will launch in L, LE, XLE, SE and XSE trims. The base L will include features such as the 1.8-liter engine, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. LE and XLE models continue with luxury-themed upgrades, while SE and XSE models add the 2.0-liter engine and other sporty enhancements.
The TRD Pro boasts an off-road-specific suspension that includes remote reservoir shocks, all-terrain tires and a front skid plate. One step above is the top-of-the-line Limited, which focuses primarily on luxury. It has 20-inch wheels, a leather interior, heated and ventilated seats, and a 15-speaker JBL stereo. Like the SR5, it has an available third row. The Limited costs nearly the same as the TRD Pro but lacks its off-road capability. And, since it's still truck-based, the Limited also lacks the on-road refinement of crossovers. Since the 4Runner's strength is in how it tackles the unpaved stuff, it's worth looking at the TRD trims instead.

Those seeking safety versus sporty will be pleased with the affordable and reliable 2019 Toyota Corolla. While the compact sedan is packed with standard driver-assistance technology, excellent crash-test ratings, and class-leading rear-seat legroom, what you won't find is driving excitement. An asthmatic four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is the standard powertrain; an optional six-speed manual provides a pulse to an otherwise lifeless front-drive partner. Apart from subpar fuel economy and inferior interior quality, the 2019 Corolla is a segment staple that will satisfy those who just want to get to their destination. Thankfully, the completely redesigned 2019 Corolla hatchback is based on an all-new platform that kicks off the next-generation models.

Edmunds editors Travis Langness and Calvin Kim take the new Subaru Forester and Toyota 4Runner on a trip to the local mountains to showcase each vehicle's strengths and weaknesses on and off the road. It's all to answer the pressing question: Does the car industry's near ideal crossover have what it takes to challenge Toyota's very definition of an SUV? How do these two fare on the roads that real people drive every day? How are they when asphalt turns to dirt? Find out as we answer these questions!
However, there are significant drawbacks to consider. The 4Runner's advanced age means it lacks the accident-avoidance tech found on other Toyota vehicles. Its cabin design and materials are more utilitarian than those of similarly priced rivals, and infotainment features route through a tiny 6.1-inch touchscreen. Also, the 4Runner can't match the on-road refinement and fuel economy of more modern crossover SUVs.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is available in five trim levels: L, LE, SE, XLE and XSE. The L, LE and XLE are powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (139 horsepower, 126 pound-feet of torque) that is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that drives the front wheels. The SE and the XLE get a 2.0-liter engine (169 hp, 151 lb-ft) and a specialized CVT automatic with paddle shifters. The SE is also eligible for a six-speed manual transmission.

Though we haven't yet driven the new Corolla sedan, our experience with the 2019 hatchback leads us to believe that this generation is a transformative one. The sedan rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform — a newer structure that also underpins the Camry, Prius and redesigned RAV4. Toyota says TNGA improves ride quality and makes the Corolla handle better, but we'll reserve final judgment until we bring these cars to our test track.
